Sony announces PMW-EX3 camcorder at NAB 2008
By Heath McKnight
Sony announced the latest camera in the XDCAM EX line, one year after the PMW-EX1 was introduced, the PMW-EX3. Like the EX1, the camera sports three 1/2 inch CCDs with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) for maximum image quality. Unlike the EX1, the lens that comes with the EX3 can be detached and different lenses can be used. Interchangeable lens features are a must for many cinematographers.
The camera rests easily on the shoulder for ENG, live production or event use. With native 24p (23.98 fps), this is also an affordable digital cinema camera for filmmakers looking to shoot high quality movies without spending too much money. Iâ??m planning on visiting Sonyâ??s booth to find out more. The camera will cost around $13,000 and will be released late this year.
On the high-end side, Sony will soon be introducing the F35, which is more advanced than the current F23. The F23 is being used by director Michael Mann on the set of â??Public Enemies,â?? starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis. The F35 promises to deliver more features and functionality for cinematographers looking to move from film into digital.

Sony also announced many partnerships to bring major TV shows into the world of HD, including the popular hit reality show â??Survivor,â?? along with the recent broadcast of â??Miss Universe,â?? which was the first time the show was shot and aired in HD. Sony is also making inroads with houses of worship who are upgrading to HD production and distribution.
